I got the video below from Slides that Stick where they point out that often graphic images have the opposite effect from what we want. But we can let the brain fill in the details. We suggest the results instead of spelling it out.
When preaching, sometimes we don't need to show every last detail. Maybe we don't need to play the video clip from "The Passion of the Christ" when preaching about Jesus' crucifixion. Maybe it will be more powerful to suggest through subtle image and poetry.
